Paris 2024 Olympics gold medallist, Letsile Tebogo, and his teammates received a heroic welcome on Tuesday in Gaborone, capital of Botswana.
Over 30,000 people filled Botswana’s national stadium to welcome home Tebogo, who won his country’s first ever Olympic gold medal.
Tebogo and his country’s Olympics contingent were given a presidential ride in the packed stadium as they soaked in the adulation of thousands of fans.
Last Thursday, the 21-year-old became the first African sprinter to win the 200 metres Olympic gold medal when he finished ahead of American duo Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles in 19.46 seconds, the fourth fastest time in the world.
The country’s President, Dr. Mokgweetsi E.K Masisi, also declared last Friday afternoon a public holiday to mark Tebogo’s historic gold medal at the Paris Games.
Botswana also won a silver medal in the men’s 4x400metres relay at the Paris Olympics, which also featured Tebogo.
