In a classic David vs Goliath match, Nigeria’s senior female basketball team D’Tigress will play defending Olympics basketball champions USA women’s team in the quarter final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The quarterfinal match will be played on Wednesday, August 7.
With a record seven consecutive titles (nine in total), and a 72–3 record in Olympic play, the Americans are one of the most dominant teams in the history of the Olympic Games.
D’Tigress made history on Sunday after beating Canada 79-70 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympic Games.
They are the first ever African basketball team (men or women) to reach the quarter final at the Olympics.
A win against the all-conquering USA women’s team would be a famous victory, not just for coach Rena Wakama and her D’Tigress team, but in the history of the Olympics basketball.
The USA women’s basketball team have had the upper hand in previous games against their Nigerian counterparts.
Earlier in February this year, the Americans beat the Africans 100-46 at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antwerp, Belgium.
At the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain, the USA team beat D’Tigress 71-40.
The US team also defeated Nigeria 93-62 in a pre-Olympic exhibition match in July 2021.
At the Tokyo Olympics proper, D’Tigress lost 81-72 to the American team in their preliminary round Group B opener.
In the other quarter final games on Wednesday, Serbia will play Australia, Spain will play Belgium, while it is Germany vs France.
