Ethiopia Replaces First Female President, Sahle-Work Zewde

Ethiopia’s first female president, Sahle-Work Zewde, who was elected by the country’s members of parliament in October 2018, has been replaced by the foreign minister, Taye Atske Selassie.

Selassie, who had served as Ethiopia’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in New York, was elected by the country’s two houses of parliament on Monday and sworn in on the same day.

The country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, while congratulating the new president, expressed his gratitude to Sahle-work Zewde for her service to the country as president for the past six years.

Zewde was the first woman to hold the office after she was unanimously elected as president by members of the country’s parliament. She had resigned her job as the special representative of the UN’s Secretary-General to the African Union to take up the largely ceremonial role as president.
