With just 10 days until the 35th Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has named a 28-man squad featuring Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Stanley Nwabali and Wilfred Ndidi, among others.
Notable omissions from Chelle’s final AFCON list include Tolu Arokodare, who featured prominently during the World Cup playoff run, as well as Victor Boniface, Kelechi Nwakali, Kenneth Omeruo and Ola Aina.
Chelle also included defenders Chidozie Awaziem and Bright Osayi-Samuel, midfielders Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika, and forwards Samuel Chukwueze and Simon Moses, among others.
There is a return for Cyprus-based goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, defender Igoh Ogbu, and forward Paul Onuachu, while England-based defender Ryan Alebiosu, and midfielders Usman Muhammed (Israel), Ebenezer Akinsanmiro (Italy), Tochukwu Nnadi (Belgium), and Croatia-based forward Salim Fago Lawal will be joining the senior team for the first time.
As part of their final preparations, the Super Eagles will face the Pharaohs of Egypt in a friendly at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday, December 16, before flying by charter from Cairo to Fès – their Group C battleground – two days later.
Three-time champions Nigeria will begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on December 23, followed by clashes with Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles (December 27) and Uganda’s Cranes (December 30).
