Tyla wins Best Afrobeats Award at 2025 MTV VMAs

South African music sensation, Tyla stole the spotlight at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), clinching the Best Afrobeats award for her smash hit “Push 2 Start”. 

Other nominees for the Best Afrobeats award category were Asake and Travis Scott – “Active”, Burna Boy ft. Travis Scott – “TaTaTa”, Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng and Shenseea – “Shake It To The Max (FLY)” (Remix), Rema – “Baby (Is It A Crime)”, Tems ft. Asake – “Get It Right”, and Wizkid ft. Brent Faiyaz – “Piece Of My Heart“.

The star-studded ceremony, held on Sunday, September 7, at the UBS Arena in New York, also celebrated some of the biggest names in music. Lady Gaga dominate the night with four awards – the highest of the evening, including the Artist of the Year, followed by Ariana Grande, who won Video of the Year and Best Pop for brighter days ahead.

Collaborations also shone brightly, with Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars winning Best Collaboration for Die With A Smile, while ROSÉ and Bruno Mars claimed Song of the Year with APT.

Other big winners included Coldplay (Best Rock), Shakira (Best Latin), Mariah Carey (Best R&B and the prestigious Video Vanguard Award), and BLACKPINK, who took home Best Group, while Alex Warren was named Best New Artist.
