FIFA World Cup 2026: Morocco Hold Brazil as Saibari Strike Earns Crucial Point

Morocco underlined their status as one of the leading teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026, holding five-time champions Brazil to a 1-1 draw in a high-quality Group C encounter in New York New Jersey on Saturday.

The Atlas Lions, who became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar four years ago, matched Brazil for long periods and could even have claimed all three points after creating several promising opportunities.

Morocco made a dream start and stunned the Seleção with a well-worked opening goal. Brahim Diaz split the Brazil defence with a perfectly weighted through ball, allowing Ismael Saibari to race clear before calmly lifting his finish beyond goalkeeper Alisson to put Morocco ahead. The goal rewarded Morocco’s positive approach and exposed gaps in the Brazilian defence.

However, Brazil responded quickly through Vinicius Junior. There appeared to be little danger when Bruno Guimaraes found Vinicius on the left side of the penalty area, but the Real Madrid winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that flew beyond the reach of Yassine Bounou.

The equaliser shifted momentum towards Brazil, who enjoyed more possession as the first half progressed. Lucas Paqueta came close to giving Brazil the lead before the interval with an acrobatic effort, but Bounou produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.

The Morocco goalkeeper was called into action again after the break, reacting smartly to deny Raphinha after another dangerous move involving Vinicius.

At the other end, Morocco remained a threat on the counterattack and continued to test the Brazilian back line. Brazil goalkeeper Alisson was equally important for his side, making a crucial save deep into stoppage time when he blocked a long-range effort from Neil El Aynaoui before quickly gathering Ayoube Amaimouni’s follow-up attempt.

The draw leaves both teams well positioned in Group C, although Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side were far from their best.

“I think we didn’t start very well. We lost a lot of duels and possession, but we improved in the second half of a difficult match because Morocco is a good team,” Ancelotti said after the match.

Brazil defender Danilo also acknowledged the quality of the North Africans. “The draw was fair because in the second half we managed to push them back. We had opportunities to score more goals, but in this type of match you have to be more clinical,” he said.

For Morocco, the result was another indication that the Atlas Lions remain capable of competing with the world’s elite nations.

“It’s a good result against Brazil, now we’ll focus on what comes next,” Morocco midfielder Samir El Mourabet said. “We know we could have scored a few more goals and we’ll need to use that as motivation for the next matches.”
