Portugal vs Nigeria: Ronaldo’s World Cup Contenders Meet Chelle’s Super Eagles

Cristiano Ronaldo and Alex Iwobi are expected to take centre stage on Wednesday night when Portugal host Nigeria in a high-profile international friendly in Leiria, as one of FIFA World Cup favourites confronts three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions in a major pre-tournament test.

Although officially classified as a friendly, the clash at the 29,000-capacity Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa carries significant weight for both teams, with Portugal fine-tuning preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Nigeria continuing to build momentum under coach Eric Chelle.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez is seeking to extend his side’s unbeaten run ahead of the World Cup, where Portugal will face DR Congo in their opening Group K fixture.

The hosts arrive in confident form after recent victories over the United States and Chile, alongside a draw against Mexico. Their only defeat in the last seven months came against the Republic of Ireland during the World Cup qualifying campaign. Martinez can also call on a star-studded squad that includes five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Rafael Leão, Rúben Dias and Diogo Dalot.

For Nigeria, however, the encounter represents another opportunity to underline the progress made under Chelle since the Franco-Malian took charge 15 months ago. Chelle has overseen 24 matches with the Super Eagles, losing only once in regulation time — a pre-AFCON friendly against Egypt in Cairo with an understrength squad. Since then, Nigeria have won the Africa Cup of Nations, retained the Unity Cup and produced several strong performances in international friendlies.

The Super Eagles also arrive in Leiria unbeaten in their last five matches, including victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica during the Unity Cup in London, as well as a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw last week.

Before kick-off, midfielder Alex Iwobi will receive special recognition on reaching 100 senior appearances for Nigeria — a major milestone for the Fulham captain, who remains one of the team’s most experienced players.

The occasion adds further significance to an already high-profile contest.

Nigeria will, however, be without Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, but Chelle retains several attacking options. But Samuel Chukwueze returns after missing the Poland friendly, while Moses Simon, Terem Moffi, Paul Onuachu, Akor Adams and Philip Otele are all expected to feature. Wing-back Abdullahi Bewene could also retain his place after an impressive debut against Poland.

In defence, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Emmanuel Fernandez are available following the injury withdrawal of Igoh Ogbu from camp on Tuesday, while captain Wilfred Ndidi is expected to partner Iwobi in midfield alongside one of Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Tochukwu Nnadi or Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The game also revives memories of previous meetings between the two countries. In November 2022, Portugal defeated Nigeria 4-0 in Lisbon ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Portugal’s Under-20 side also denied Nigeria the FIFA U-20 World Cup title in Saudi Arabia in 1989, beating the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the final.

Wednesday’s kick-off is scheduled for 8:45pm local time.
