Atlas Lions Roar: Morocco Win Record Third CHAN Title

2025 AFCON hosts defeat Madagascar in Final

Morocco lifted a record third African Nations Championship (CHAN) crown after defeating Madagascar 3-2 in a thrilling final at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday.

In a gritty display of pedigree, resilience, and tactical nous, the Atlas Lions underlined their credentials as early favourites for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which they will host in December.

By winning CHAN 2024, christened PAMOJA 2024, Morocco – 2018 and 2020 champions – are now the most successful team in the competition’s history, surpassing DR Congo’s two titles.

Midfielder Mohamed Rabie Hrimat was crowned Player of the Tournament, while striker Oussama Lamlaoui, who netted twice in the final — including a stunning 40-yard strike — finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

The North Africans claimed the gold medal and $3.5 million prize money, while Madagascar, silver medallists in only their second CHAN appearance, earned $1.2 million. The island nation also made history as the first from the Indian Ocean to reach a CAF senior final, and the 13th country overall.

Meanwhile, Senegal clinched third place after defeating Sudan 4-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday. The defending champions, who were denied another final after losing to Morocco in the semi-finals, also received the Fair Play Trophy for their exemplary discipline, respect, and sportsmanship.

The final capped a thrilling month-long tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
