African Giant: Burna Boy joins England Lionesses in Triumphant Euros Homecoming

Grammy-award winner congratulates Super Falcons

Nigerian and Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy Tuesday joined British royalty on stage in London to celebrate the triumphant England Women national team, the Lionesses, who were recently crowned UEFA Women Euros 2025 champions.

The Lionesses successfully defend their European title with a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Spain in Switzerland on Sunday. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time.

England’s double winning coach Sarina Wiegman is huge fan of Burna Boy, who is reportedly her favourite artiste.

With an estimated 65,000 fans welcoming the team during the parade, Burna Boy joined Weigman and her winning squad on stage to celebrate their Euros victory near Buckingham Palace, as they played one of his hit songs, For My Hand (ft Ed Sheeran). The Dutch coach stood in excited disbelief when the Nigerian superstar was first introduced. She then hugged him, sang and danced happily alongside him.

“Yeah, Sarina’s got rhythm. She absolutely loves Burna Boy. I can’t believe it. Her face when they brought Burna Boy out was a picture. None of us could believe it to be honest, and yeah, she was bursting out some moves and singing away, so that was a special moment,” England defender Esme Morgan told BBC Sport.

On the other side of the world. Burna Boy’s compatriots, Nigeria’s women national team also won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for a record-extending 10th time with a sensational comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 against host Morocco in an epic final on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The Super Falcons historic win against the Atlas Lionesses was not lost on the Grammy-award winning Afrobeats superstar though.

In a post on his official X handle on Monday, Burna Boy congratulated the team for winning the WAFCON.

“Big love to the Super Falcons 10X champions and still making history! You all inspire me. Can’t wait to see you lot soon #NoSignOfWeakness #WAFCONQueens,” he captioned his post which had a photo of the team lifting the continental trophy in Morocco.

On Monday, the Super Falcons arrived Abuja to a mass of adoring crowd at the airport and later received a presidential welcome in Abuja as they were honoured by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.

At a grand reception at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and 11 technical crew members of the Super Falcons.

The President also announced a reward of naira equivalent of $100,000 each to the players and $50,000 each to the coaches and support staff, while each member of the team will also receive a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja under the Nigerian government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

““You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable. You have inspired me too. And it’s great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after.

“You represent that hope. You ignited that hope. We will continue to encourage you, the next generation, and other generations after you,” Tinubu said at the reception.
