Saibari Fires Morocco Past Scotland to Boost World Cup Hopes

Ismael Saibari scored the fastest goal in Morocco’s World Cup history as the Atlas Lions secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Saibari struck after just two minutes in Boston, giving Morocco a crucial three points and moving the North Africans to the top of Group C with four points from two matches.

The decisive moment came early when Brahim Diaz delivered a perfectly weighted pass behind the Scottish defence. Saibari raced onto the ball, controlled it brilliantly and fired past goalkeeper Angus Gunn into the roof of the net.

The goal was not only enough to separate the two sides but also became Morocco’s fastest-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup and the quickest scored at the tournament so far.

Scotland responded well after the early setback and gradually worked their way back into the match. However, Morocco remained dangerous on the counterattack and continued to create the better chances.

After the break, Saibari almost doubled Morocco’s lead when his deflected effort struck the crossbar following good work from Bilal El Khannouss down the left flank.

Moments later, El Khannouss nearly found the net himself, but Gunn reacted well to deny him from close range. Scotland pushed forward in the closing stages as John McGinn, Ben Doak and Scott McTominay searched for an equaliser.

The pressure increased during the final 15 minutes, but Morocco’s defence remained disciplined and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou helped ensure the Atlas Lions left with all three points.

“I think we played a very good game against a strong opponent with a lot of experienced players,” Bounou said after the match. “We had patience, created chances and defended well when we needed to.”

Scotland coach Steve Clarke praised his team’s response after conceding so early but admitted the result was disappointing. “We picked ourselves up after the goal and got back into the game,” Clarke said. “I’m proud of the players, but we’re obviously disappointed not to get the result we wanted.”

The win continues Morocco’s impressive start to the tournament after their draw with Brazil and leaves them well placed in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

Saibari’s latest goal makes him the second African player after Egypt’s Mohamed Salah in 2018 to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances.
