The Super Eagles are focused on getting the maximum six points available in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, according to interim manager Augustine Eguavoen.
The Nigerian national team will lock horns with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Saturday, September 7, and tackle Rwanda’s Amavubi in Kigali three days later.
Former Super Eagles coach, 71-year-old German Gernot Rohr, who led the Nigerian national team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a third-place finish in the 2019 AFCON, is now the coach of the Benin national team.
Speaking ahead of the Benin match, Eguavoen said, “Our objective is clear: to pick the six points in both matches. The players know this and are committed to accomplishing this. The matches will not be easy; no qualifying game can be taken for granted because all the teams want to play in the finals. However, we have spoken to the players and all of us are on the same page.
“Starting with the match against Benin Republic on Saturday, nobody is mentioning anything about revenge. Our goal is three points, and then we aim for another three points in Kigali on Tuesday that will put us in good stead for qualification.”
The Eguavoen-led Super Eagles includes the returning Victor Osimhen – who missed the two games in June, and recently moved to Turkish club Galatasaray, among others, who would want to make amends for the poor results recorded in their last two FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches in June.
